Last week, the Safe and Inclusive Schools Committee held its first meeting of 2026 where school principals, staff, and board members gathered to focus on important topics such as bullying, areas of growth and improvement, staff reporting, and ways to better celebrate diversity in schools.
During the meeting, principals shared positive progress they have seen in addressing bullying among students. Corydon Intermediate Principal Wendy Carter highlighted significant improvement after taking a more intentional approach to addressing harmful language. Instead of simply encouraging students to “be kind,” she met with each class to explain why certain language was hurtful and how words can impact others. By helping students better understand the depth and consequences of their words, the school saw a noticeable increase in students being more mindful about their words and the way they treat their peers.

Additionally, the meeting emphasized the importance of teachers promptly reporting any incidents of bullying. When teachers report witnessing or becoming aware of a student being treated unkindly, it allows for a proper and thorough investigation to take place and, if necessary, proceed with appropriate disciplinary action.
The group also discussed the importance of encouraging students to report such incidents to staff and educating them on how to recognize bullying behaviors. When students are able to identify these actions, they are more likely to report them promptly and accurately whether they experience them personally or witness them happening to their peers. This proactive approach helps ensure that bullying concerns are addressed in a timely and effective manner.

Lastly, they discussed ways they can better celebrate diversity in their schools. Several attendees discussed ways they can celebrate with greater intention and thoughtful consideration. They came up with different ideas from implementing it into the curriculum to exploring different traditions, foods, music, etc. from different cultures.

Overall the meeting was a great opportunity to reflect, grow, and collaborate. These ongoing conversations and shared efforts will continue to fuel growth across the district by addressing concerns, celebrating diversity intentionally, and holding one another accountable. South Harrison remains committed to fostering a learning environment where every student feels safe, valued, and empowered to succeed. We look forward to the next Safe and Inclusive Schools Committee meeting and hope to see you there!
